TTT and LTT

Trainer Talking Time is often greatest in the presentation stage. It should decrease as the stages progress from presentation through practice to production.

Learner Talking Time should progressively increase as learners acquire the target language.

Overall, trainers try to keep TTT to a minimum to give the learners more time to practice speaking during the lesson.

Practice

Practice is given by getting learners to repeat the language item together or by going round the class. Most frequently, however, language is practiced by learners asking and answering each other across the classroom rather than in a round (this is called ‘weaving’).
 
Accuracy is important at this stage.

Production

Production starts when the learners have mastered the target language items or structures.
 
Production usually takes place in pairs or in groups: with the trainer monitoring the learners, but not interfering with the activity.
 
The aim of production is to increase fluency of language use.

Presentation

Language is presented by the trainer by first trying to ‘fish’ for the language item from the learners (eliciting).
 
If the word or phrase is not known, the item is introduced by the trainer (feeding) e.g.
 

BRAND   Trainer:  Levi’s. Wrangler. Calvin Klein. are all.? (Brands of jeans ) Can I make a pair of jeans and call them Levi’s? Why not?

BRAND IDENTITY  Trainer: The image or impression created for this brand could be called ? (= brand identity)
