Motivation is the key to persistence and drives behaviour. continuous motivation is needed to help learners concentrate on the lessons to be learned. Motivation therefore plays the most important role for student achievement. The main aim of motivation is to facilitate and stimulate the learning process or the students. As a result, guiding strategies for learning and improvement should be based on student motivation. It is important to help each student clarify their purpose and then create an educational experience for that that leads to that desired purpose and outcome. Student motivation is related to their desire to participate in the learning process, specially in an online classroom. An understanding of the nature of motivation is crucial as motivation determines, not only the intensity of the effort to learn, but also the extent to which this effort is made an activity of the students’ total personality. The best form of motivation is intrinsic motivation, which results in students passionately learning for their own sake as it provokes a sense of accomplishment and pride in them. On the contrary, extrinsic motivation results in students performing and learning for the sake of obtaining some reward, or perhaps even to avoid a punishment. Examples of this include motivation to obtain a certificate rather than getting educated, to gain prestige in the eyes of family and friends or simply approval of a teacher and parents. Extrinsic motivation is however, mainly seen in children as adults usually voluntarily and passionately join a language class. So, although it may appear that students are equally motivated to perform a task, their motivation source may differ. As a trainer, it is important to identify the learner’s source of motivation to be able to monitor and influence factors that motivate them.
Another factor that affects the students’ motivation is their self-efficacy, which is their sense of ability to succeed at a given task. Students who perceive them self with limited capabilities and lack confidence will lack the motivation and energy to succeed in their learning. The trainer will therefore need to help them build some confidence and trust in themselves by focusing on their achievements in class. This can be achieved through giving students positive and constructive feedback. It is very important to deal with the mistakes students make with care and to deliver feedback cautiously so the students don’t take it personally or lose motivation. The trainer needs to focus on building motivation and self-esteem in their students with patience, respect and care.

Motivation is crucial for the final result of any path a person decides to take. It is the strenghts making you go through every difficult situation. That applies to small and less important matters, as well as pretty important ones. Motivation is the core point. Everything depends on motivation, in my opinion.
Adults want to learn a foreign language for many reasons: job, personal culture, relatives living abroad, love, to feel more comfortable when they have to travel…
I saw a perfect example of a motivated man in a video that I saw during a Cambridge webinar: an old man needs to learn English and he begins by buying a book “English for beginners”. he studies day and night, he does everything with his headsets on, listening and repeating at home, in the city, in the bus… He puts lots of post-its everywhere in the house in order to learn and remember as much vocabulary as he can. He watches film and repeats the script while he’s having a bath.
At the end of the video we see that he’s visiting his son in England and we understand that he has to meet his niece for the first time. He wanted to be prepared to meet her and tell her that he was her grandpa and that she was perfect. That’s what motivation makes you do.

Here is the center of the students wishes in learning a new language. Starting from the very first lessons, the trainer should try to discover and understand the real motivation that brought each one of his students to start learning the language he is teaching.
Motivation is the basement on which everyone bild their own projects. As everybody knows, if a building has got a fragile foundation, it risks to fall down. I am sure this concept could fit even with a student motivation, especially dealing with adult learners.
It exists an immense panorama of motivations on which lay the reason of the choise to start to learn a new language.
We can try to list some of them like, to get a promotion at work, to go abroad to study, to woo some foreiner, to make a trip in a country or simply to work with people of another country, and so on.
Really, it is not possible to list all the motivation to learn a new language because eachone of them it is stricly connected with the project and the feeelings of each person, even if we are talking about a motivation which seems to be the same for two different people.
The trainer has to discover the motivation of each student. This is a quite easy job if he, or she, has got an hight level class and the learners are able to speak and elaborate complexes concepts. It becomes more difficult for a trainer with beginner students. Anyway, it happens after few lessons, just when the students are able to construct a sentence because everyone will bring examples strictly connected with his own motivation. I had a studend, a lady, whom used always examples concernig arts or literature each time I asked her to do an example with the new item we were studing.
To conclude, I’m sure motivation is as important for the student as it is for the trainer, in order to keep hight the student’s attention, interest and progress.

Motivation is an amazing topic, especially i nterms of adult education and training. I am fan of intrinsic motivation – the best results of learning and learn achievemnt we gain when we are self motivated and do not have a pressure.

We know that is very different a bussiness course, a course in the library to retired people, course to obtain ufficial certification…
The motivation is the key to organize the work and give to the student the skills that he need to learn to reach her obiettive and to learn the language (objetives and learning is not always the same).

Motivation has an important role in learning. It enables learners to reach a specific goal, and it is a prerequisite for learning. A learner can achieve his or her goal through intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. It is important to explain intrinsic and extrinsic motivation at this point. Intrinsic motivation refers to doing something without any external rewards. Intrinsic motivation affects behaviour more quickly. Extrinsic motivation is, on the contrary, a reward driven behaviour. Some researchers demonstrate that learners who are motivated intrinsically are more successful than the learners who are motivated extrinsically. Motivation gives a student the opportunity to be ready to learn during the learning process. Learners with high motivation can easily focus on their studies, they set goals and try to reach their goals.
While some students are eager to learn, some students might need or expect to be encouraged and stimulated by their teachers. In order to be able to motivate their students, teachers should be enthusiastic and positive in the classroom. They should create a learner-friendly, open atmosphere in the class to get their students motivated. Furthermore, teachers should use various techniques and methods, such as role playing, brainstorming, discussion, pairwork and groupwork, demonstrations, in their class to motivate students since learners learn effectively by doing, constructing, solving, and creating. Lessons should be interesting and clear, with a lot of different activities. In this way, students will be motivated to participate in the lesson actively and will be involved in the learning process. Especially working together motivates learners; learners enjoy solving problems and work on projects with other students. During this activity, learners also motivate each other to reach a goal. Moreover, it is important for teachers to know the interests of their students to get them motivated. Teachers can use these interests to relate the materials to things which learners are interested in. Teachers should be caring and supportive, kind, and helpful in order to motivate their students. Teachers should respect their students’ opinions and values. All in all, motivation is important in learning process; teachers should motivate their students who need or expect to be stimulated and encouraged by their teachers.

Motivation is the key of the learning process. Without motivation our students wouldn’t want to go to class, they wouldn’t have a reason on going to class and learning. Motivation is the wish to learn a new language, to practice it, to listen to it, to watch examples of it, to experiment with it… Motivation is to feel like learning a new language, feel like going to class…
Usually, adults have internal motivation to learn because they have marked some specific goals they want to reach.
Kids’ motivation doesn’t come internally usually, it has to come by the teacher’s behavior, her personality or teaching style, or by the group dynamics.

There are specific motivational components of the course. First of all, it could be refering to the place of learning, if this place is far or close, if they have to walk too much or not, if they like the place or not… It could also be refering to personal issues, mental or physical health, family issues, learning issues of the learner… There are a lot of components that can modify the motivation of the learner.

There are also specific motivational components related to the teacher’s behavior, personality and
teaching style. Fore example, it is not the same working with a traditional learning method’ teacher than with a teacher that works with the InLingua method. Every teacher has different teaching styles and methods, different personalities, different ways of taking the group class… And all of these influences the way learners learn.

Finally, there are specific motivational components related to the group dynamics of the learner’s group. Each group is different, they behave different, they act different and they have different personalities. All these, controls they way the learner learns too.

When it comes to motivation we have to be very careful in how we “motivate” or “push” students to learn and test their limits. Every student comes from a different backgound and has been through so many different experiences that we need to be both sensible and sensitive enough to guide them properly into lerning and not to create a backlash effect. The least we want is demotivated students that are no longer willing to learn or that for some reason have developed a dislike towards the language. This is something extremely common, I think we’ve all had a “bad”teacher that made us dislike learning a specific subject rather than encourage and incite us to learn. This is one of the most unfortunate events that one person can experience through any learning process. This is why we need to be careful and be well prepared in the method to avoid saying or doing anything that may be counterproductive for the students’ feelings when it comes to learning languages.

If there is no motivation, there can difficultly be a learner. It is crucial for one to be motivated in order to learn anything in general. You can introduce to people as many learning methods as you want (how to learn French in a week; learn German in five steps; take English class only 10 minutes a day and speak it in a year; etc.), but if there is no motivation, no method will work effectively. It is the most important ingredient.

Motivation is the key element to any successful learning experience. Motivation is what makes the learner fully aware of what they want to achieve and why. The higher the motivation pf the leaners, the easier it is for the teacher to teach them. Therefore, it is easier to teach adults than young learners. When teaching kids nad teens it is important to constantly find new ways to motivate them and reward them. It is extremely importanto to always give them some positive feedback and to push them towards the next step.

The teacher should clearly understand the purpose and importance of motivation. The main purpose of motivation is to encourage and make the learning easy because learning is an active process that needs to be motivated. Learning must be supported not to let the student give up. A definite motive is valuable in all work, because motives guarantee readiness. If learners are ready, they will achieve the result they want so the learners will be satisfied by their results. Motivated students treat learning like a game so they like to see learning from a new angle. It does not mean that motivated learners are smarter than unmotivated ones, but their need to find the answer to a question makes them to think deeper. Motivated students will think about questions more deeply because they are not the ones who are afraid of low grades which means that motivated students will ask more challenging questions to find the answer. When the student is really interested in a task, the stress decreases. They do not think about the bad grades during the learning process, they are more concentrated on the solution of it. Therefore, we as teachers may take an action to motivate the learners. Students may unintentionally give up because they believe that it would be easy to succeed and if it is hard for them it means that they are not going to succeed. Teachers can correct this misconception by giving examples of failures that people overcame on the way to success. Also, teachers need to encourage the students to ask for some help. We as teachers should help them by assuring the learners that it is okay to fail, the important thing is to move on and try again.

Motivation is a key factor for a successful learning process, both for adults and children.

Adults tend to be more motivated than children when learning English, if this is what they deliberately chose to do. Sometimes they can be ‘forced’ by the company they work for or their boss to attend a course, other times they need to learn / improve the language because they are about to get a promotion or relocate abroad.
In this scenario, students can be reluctant to work hard and just do the bare minimum to stay on the course and pass a final exam, if there is one.
If students are really motivated to study English it is generally because THEY made the decision to start a course (and they are paying for the course, not their company!). In this other scenario, they will be far more committed and dedicated to improving and practising and they will make progress more quickly.

Another factor to take into account when considering adults and motivation is the atmosphere in the classroom and the attitude of the teacher.
Students are naturally ‘exposed’ in class and they need to feel comfortable. Many adults are used to being the ‘teacher’ and not ‘the student’, at work, with their families, etc. so it can be quite embarassing for them to put the ‘student’s hat’ for an hour and feeling completely vulnerable. This is why it is so important to have the right attitude towards them, so they don’t feel patronized or embarassed. Adults (as young adults) don’t want to lose face in front of a group, they like to be respected and if they feel there is the right mood in the classroom this will help them build confidence and trust the other fellow students as well.

This last question applies to young adults, teenagers and children as well. By recognizing the value of every single student as an individual, the trainer is able to created a relaxed atmosphere which is essential for everybody to express their opinions freely, without being afraid to make a mistake.
For younger learners it is of paramount importance to keep them interested in the lesson, dealing with topics that can be of interest and using strategies to involve them as much as possible.
Most of the time they HAVE to attend a course, maybe because they need to improve grades at school or just because their parents think learning English is a good opportunity to have better future prospects; in both cases the trainer must do their best to keep the learners interest at maximum level.

Motivation is a crucial factor when learning a language. Breaking with the typical and starting to study something new causes a significant change in mentality. The teacher, in this case, has a fundamental role, since he is in charge of maintaining this motivation in the students. That is, he must be in charge of creating interesting and dynamic lessons, of increasing students’ self-esteem by generating clear and specific objectives and correct planning. For example: create activities in which students have to express their opinion and work as a team or in pairs, involve music, art, literature in the teaching of second languages so that the student finds this learning more interesting, etc. .
Also, I would like to highlight the fact that everything always depends on the group-class and the level they have, each person and each group is a world so it must be the teacher’s mission to create one activity or another in order to generate this motivation in them.

Motivation is a key aspect of learning process.

As trainers, when we are introduced to a new student, we have to know why is he or she willing to learn a new language for academic, professional or personal matters.
Students’ age and background, are factors to be taken into consideration when assessing someone’s motivation. Thus, as trainers we are bound to seek a balance between maintaining audience’s interest alive and achieving goals. If we are dealing with younger learners, we must bear in mind how much of an effort it is for children and teenagers to stay focused for a whole hour of lesson, and coming to class is rarely a pleasure for them. We should always pay special attention to the lesson’s structure and landmarks. Timing is of an utter importance.

Using from time to time a tool such as Kahoot has proved to be useful for practicing what has been taught in class, while creating emulation between students. Even though I don’t advocate for competition, I tend to think stimulating students helps them staying motivated.
When teaching to adults, even if it can also be challenging to keep them “on the track” for a whole class, discussing, reading or writing about a topic is often easier, as grown-ups can rely on their life experiences.

To conclude I’d say that listening carefully to students’ questions and statements is of an utter importance, because this makes them feel involved in the class and valued.
